About Maya Lewis

Maya Lewis, a 25-year-old Caribbean-American photographer from Brooklyn, New York, has dedicated her career to capturing the rich, multifaceted experiences of black individuals and people of color. In 2021, Maya earned her Bachelor of Science in Photography with a minor in Women and Gender Studies from Ithaca College.

Maya's work focuses on the intersectional identities and experiences of black individuals across the diaspora, particularly emphasizing women of color. By examining themes of gender, race, class, and sexuality, she challenges conventional binaries and seeks to redefine the perception and portrayal of blackness and other social constructs through her captivating portraits.

In 2021, Maya received the prestigious Chawla/Ochoa Academic Award at Ithaca College for her first photography book, "Brown Sugar." This collection of intimate photographs and self-directed portraits of Black individuals explores and challenges the portrayal of Black bodies in American media. The project aimed to redefine self-love centered around Blackness.
